In a Post-War Tokyo, when the bureaucratic chief of department of the City Hall Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura) finds that he has a terminal cancer, he decides to intensively live his last months of life. While dying, he finds the meaning of life, and fights for the construction of a playground in a poor zone of the city and the legacy of his existence.

Deze film van de regisseur van de welbekende filosofische (Samurai) films 'Akira Kurosawa' heeft met Ikiru weer eens laten zien dat hij zeker tot één van de groten der cinema genoemd mag worden, in dezelfde categorie als wat mij betreft: Andrei Tarkovsky. The Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) offers his daughter Pamina (Irma Urrila) to Tamino (Josef Köstlinger), but he has to bring her back from her father and priest Sarastro (Ulrik Cold). She gives a magic flute to Tamino and magic bells to the bird hunter Papageno (Håkan Hagegård), who follows Tamino and wants to find a wife. The duo travels in a journey of love and knowledge.

Deze film van Ingmar Bergman is een hommage aan Mozart. Trollflöjten, ook wel bekend als The Magic Flute is een verfilming van Mozart's opera Die Zauberflüte. Bergman koos ervoor een natuurlijke eenvoud verfilming, in plaats van een filosofische verfilming. Ook voerde hij een paar belangrijke veranderingen door, zo wordt de opera in het Zweeds gezongen en zijn de dialogen ingekort. Dit is een geniale operaverfilming. The young irresponsible graffiti artist Daniel, who does not care much for finances and rules, spurs romance and helps his friend and himself go through times and struggles of their ordinary life in Denmark. He meets Franc, the Bakery girl, who leads an irresponsible life just like him. They fell in love with eachother and their romance has many joyful and painful moments. How will the two end up?

Deze film van Dagur Kári, die eerder al de onverwachte filmhuishit Nói Albínói maakte, is een poëtische, Deense komedie. Dagur Kári won op het International Film Festival Rotterdam 2003 al de MovieZone Award van de jongerenjury voor Nói Albínói. Voknse Mennesker, ook wel bekend als Dark Horse, is een prachtige zwart-wit komedie film, met veel hilarische en absurde scenes. Grappige en trieste momenten wisselen elkaar af. In a dream-like sequence, a woman's eye is slit open--juxtaposed with a similarly shaped cloud obsucuring the moon moving in the same direction as the knife through the eye--to grab the audience's attention. The French phrase "ants in the palms," (which means that someone is "itching" to kill) is shown literally. A man pulls a piano along with the tablets of the Ten Commandments and a dead donkey towards the woman he's itching to kill. A shot of differently striped objects is repeatedly used to connect scenes.

Dit surrealistisch meesterwerk van Luis Bunuel & Salvador Dali is een aaneenschakeling van de beelden die ze de nacht ervoor hadden gedroomd. Un Chien Andalou is een 17 minuten durende droom, of nachtmerrie. Bij de eerste vertoning van de film in de beroemde bioscoop Studio 28 brak er een schandaal uit. Vele klachten kwamen binnen bij de politie, men was kennelijk nog niet klaar voor het surrealisme in film. Tegenwoordig wordt de film geprezen om zijn uniekheid en haalt men er veel inspiratie uit. Deze film van Robert Wiene is één van de eerste, meest artistieke, invloedrijke 'German Expressionist' films ooit gemaakt. Das Cabinet der Dr. Caligari, ook wel bekend als The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, is een uniek meesterwerk. Door de prachtige decors (misschien wel de mooiste ooit) en de sfeer is deze film een must-see voor echte filmliefhebbers. O.a Tim Burton zou geïnspireerd zijn door deze film. The sufferings of a martyr, Jeanne D'Arc (1412-1431). Jeanne appears in court where Cauchon questions her and d'Estivet spits on her. She predicts her rescue, is taken to her cell, and judges forge evidence against her. In her cell, priests interrogate her and judges deny her the Mass. Threatened first in a torture chamber and then offered communion if she will recant, she refuses. At a cemetery, in front of a crowd, a priest and supporters urge her to recant; she does, and Cauchon announces her sentence. In her cell, she explains her change of mind and receives communion. In the courtyard at Rouen castle, she burns at the stake; the soldiers turn on the protesting crowd.

Dit meesterwerk van Carl Theodor Dreyer is gemaakt in Frankrijk, vlak voor de opkomst van de geluidsfilm. La Passion De Jeanne d'Arc, ook wel bekend als The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, is een veel besproken film door filmhistorici, dit door de excentrieke cameravoering en de hoeveelheid aan close ups. Tijdens de martelscenes wordt de aandacht gevestigd op Jeanne's gezichtsuitdrukkingen, via close ups. Op deze manier wordt de emotie en wanhoop op de kijker overgebracht. Een emotioneel meesterwerk. Bunuel's first feature has more of a plot than Un Chien Andalou, but it's still a pure Surrealist film, so this is only a vague outline. A man and a woman are passionately in love with one another, but their attempts to consummate that passion are constantly thwarted, by their families, the Church and bourgeois society.

Deze film van Luis Buñuel, die net als Un Chien Andalou mede geschreven is door Salvador Dali heeft voor veel oproering gezorgd in de jaren 30, dit vooral in religieuze kringen. Dit heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de film 50 jaar lang niet getoond mocht worden. L'Age Dor is een surrealistische film, in de puurste zin van het woord. Luis Buñuel wordt ook wel 'The father of cinematic Surrealism' genoemd. L'Age Dor is een indrukwekkende, gepassioneerde droom. Soundmix: Mono, Muziek: Luis Buñuel & Georges Van Parys, Jaar: 1930.

Deze horror klassieker van Carl Theodor Dreyer is opgebouwd als een silent film, hoewel er ook dialogen tussen zitten. Dit is de eerste film waarin Carl Theodor Dreyer gebruik maakt van geluid. Hij zegt gedeeltelijk geïnspireerd te zijn door Salvador Dali en Luis Bunuel, wat goed te merken valt aan Vampyr: Der Traum des Allan Gray. Mary Henry is enjoying the day by riding around in a car with two friends. When challenged to a drag, the women accept, but are forced off of a bridge. It appears that all are drowned, until Mary, quite some time later, amazingly emerges from the river. After recovering, Mary accepts a job in a new town as a church organist, only to be dogged by a mysterious phantom figure that seems to reside in an old run-down pavilion. It is here that Mary must confront the personal demons of her spiritual insouciance.

Deze film is in slechts twee week tijd gemaakt door regisseur Herk Harvey, die zegt geïnspireerd te zijn door het zien van Saltaire pavillion/park in Utah, USA. Carnival of Souls is wat men noemt een echte cult classic. O.a David Lynch zou geïnspireerd zijn door de film van Herk Harvey, aangezien deze vaak films maakt over een vrouw in de (psychische) problemen. Zwart-wit film, die een prachtige sfeer uitbeeld.
